The Mystery of the Missing Blank

Today, I thought we'd try a fun exercise inspired by my losing something this morning. I'll give you my instance, and you can provide yours, real or fictional.

The Mystery of the Missing Password -

Being semi-organized, I have trouble finding items at home, sometimes even important ones. This morning I had to remember where I'd put a new password I'd made up last month. Of course, I couldn't remember the handy, safe spot where I'd put it. Fortunately for me, the site was one where I could click and say I'd forgotten and after a few security questions, I could make up a new one.

If a were writing The Mystery of the Missing Password, I'd specify the password could not be changed if forgotten. Not remembering that password would carry enormous consequences, perhaps over life and death of the main character, or worse, a country or the world.

Your Turn -

In the comment section, fill in your Mystery of the Missing Blank and provide a brief description. It could be about a novel or part of a novel which could be written, has already been written, or maybe you'd like to just provide a real life mystery not writing related.

I don't have to make up a story. I'm constantly involved on a search for something. Neither hubby or I have any memory cells left, so we're either looking for his sun glasses, keys, or something I've put away in a place I'm sure I'll remember, but don't. The most recent happened this morning. I usually leave my cell phone next to my recliner, but when I sat down and wanted to make a call, I couldn't find it. I searched all the regular places I thought I might have left it, but to no avail. My husband wasn't home, so I couldn't ask for his help in the search, but I did prevail upon him, using the landline the ask him to call my cell number. Lo and behold, I found my phone hidden between the couch cushions. How it got there, I have no idea. I can't wait to see what I lose tomorrow. Like I said, everyday is an adventure in our house.

Just recently I lost some paperwork for a storage unit. We're in the middle of moving, so we had to stored our things into a unit last month. When the lady from the storage place called a couple of days ago, to tell us we needed to pay for another month, I got confused. (I thought we had another week.) I searched and searched for the document we signed, but couldn't find them.
I ended up calling her back. Yes, we needed to pay the bill the next day or they would have to charge a late fee.
We have to pay a late fee next week.
And I still can't find those stupid papers.

In real life, the remote control went missing when the cat took it. (Another reason besides their own safety a cat should not be an indoor/outdoor one.)

Bob...Thanks for the gentle reminder that there are so many things in our own backyard that can be translated into interest in the stories we develop. I'm thinking about the grave cleaning that goes on once a year at a small graveyard by the Sons of the Confederacy. Gotta be able to work something there.

The only rule: writers write! Everthing else is a guideline.

I used to lose my wife in the Super Walmart. She'd wander off down a new aisle and I'd search for hours. She refused to wear a cow bell, so I came up with the solution. Now, I follow ten steps behind her. That way, when she veers off, I'll know.

I had a particular hat that always wandered off somewhere when I took it off. When it finally left home for good I actually felt relieved.

It's comforting to know my husband and I aren't the only ones who misplace things.
I didn't mention the remote we lost over 10 years ago. We suspect it went out to the recycling bin with a bunch of papers. Fortunately, we were able to use a universal remote instead.

you name it, it's gone missing at my house _ keys, remotes, glasses, scissors, tape, one sock, the favorite belt, the bug spray. My husbandis always convinced someone threw his things away, so we end up searching through the garbage a lot. Most of the time, the things are elsewhere. We just found his sunglasses case under our bed. Why???? Gremlins. That has to be the answer.
