I Love A Mystery

Anyone remember that old radio show?

When I was a kid, radio was the only form of at-home entertainment (besides all the stuff we managed to do on our own.) I loved all the mystery and scary shows: Inner Sanctuary was a big favorite, but there were many, many more.

I'd listen whenever they were on and often did my homework at the same time.

My sis and I each had our own Philco radio--and besides the regular broadcasts we could also tune in police calls. We weren't supposed to listen to them, but we often did after we were supposed to be asleep. The night the Black Dahlia was found cut up in a vacant lot--we were listening. Was that ever scary! And we knew it was real, not like the mystery shows.

During the night my sis (who was five years younger than I was) got on the bottom of my bed. I felt her leg, thought that was all there was not wanting to feel the bloody stump and screamed bloody murder. Mom knew exactly what we'd been doing and bawled us out.

We got the first TV on the block--thanks to my dad putting one together from a kit, with help from my sis and me finding the proper colored and coded wires. Then our entertainment was watching wrestling, roller derby and Cecil and Beanie--along with most of our neighbors who dropped by after dinner every night.

Later, a couple of our favorite mystery shows became TV shows--in black and white, of course.

I have fond memories of those old radio shows--the certainly sparked my imagination.

Because we lived in L.A., my mom and I would often go to the production of those old radio shows. I saw a lot of my favorite movie stars in person that way.

Is it any wonder that I now write my own mysteries? Are any of you old enough to remember those old radio shows?

Why did I do two posts today? That's a mystery in itself.
