A little history about No Sanctuary: 

This is #5 in the Rocky Bluff P.D. series.

The first four books in the series were published by 2 different publishers. Had some problems with the first publisher. The second one decided to no longer be a publisher.

I met Billie Johnson of Oak Tree Press at the Public Safety Writers Association Conference. She asked me to be a speaker at a writers' conference in her (at that time) home town of Taylorville, IL. I'd approached her about continuing the Rocky Bluff P.D. series, and while I was back in Illinois she brought me a contract.

Over the years I'm attended and belonged to various Protestant churches and known many ministers and their wives, and people who work and volunteer in churches.

One of the churches greatly resembles the church I attended as a child. I've never attended a large, wealthy church like the second one in the book. Neither minister is like any I knew. However, the church secretary is a lot like one who was my friend and knew all of the secrets of the church she worked for.

Frankly, I had a lot of fun writing this mystery.

The Rocky Bluff P.D. Series Began Because of This Man

Officer Michael Cole was my son-in-law and felt like a son to me. Married to my daughter, he was the father of their three boys. Twenty-three years ago, only a couple of years after this photo was taken, he was killed in the line of duty.

I doubt seriously if I'd have written the Rocky Bluff P.D. series if it hadn't been for Mike. When he first became a police officer, he would always come over after his graveyard shift and tell me what all had happened on the job.

He took me on a ride-along once, after making me promise I wouldn't tell anyone I was his mother-in-law. I was impressed by how he could quietly calm a volatile situation--I was not impressed with his very fast driving. (This was in the days before seat belts.)

When I first stared writing, he let me see some of his police reports and I confess, some of what he wrote sneaked into my books.

I also used situations in told me about, ones that involved other police officers. Of course I never wrote anything exactly as it happened--but the incident would trigger an idea that I worked into a plot.

He never did see any of these books in print--he was gone before that happened.

What he told me had a great influence on my writing. His being a husband and father also influenced my writing greatly and part of the reason I've always put a lot of what is going on with the families of the police officers I write about into each Rocky Bluff P.D. mystery.

Some of the characters are similar to some of the fellow officers, male and female, that he told me about.

I also wrote the award winning book, Lingering Spirit, which is not a mystery but more of a romance with a bit of the supernatural, based on Mike's untimely death and what happened after, though highly fictionalized.

Going on a Road Trip

This is going to be quite an experience. I'm going to Wordstock in Portland OR with my publisher. She's driving, I'm riding along. It will be one long trip--probably too long for this old author. I don't want her going alone.

What's Wordstock? Kind of like the L.A. Times Book Festival except inside. A two day affair all about books. Oak Tree Press is going to have a booth and showcase many of the books put out by its authors, including two of mine. Not sure which two at the moment, as I know covers attract readers--and buyers of books. I will take my latest Rocky Bluff P.D. but not sure which other one.

In the meantime, I'm going to be at the beginning of my blog tour for my Deputy Tempe Crabtree mystery, Spirit Shapes. Which means I'll be trying to find Wi Fi along the way so I can promote the blog I'm on each day and respond to those who comment. I also have to keep track of each person and how many times they comment because I'm running a contest that will be won by the person who comments on the most blogs.
(And to make things more interesting, Spirit Shapes is put out by a different publisher, so I won't be promoting it at Wordstock.)

Several of Oak Tree Press's authors are going to be in attendance, so I won't have to hang around our booth all the time, we won't have enough chairs for that anyway. Maybe I can sneak off and do some writing on the book I should be working on right now.

In terms of helping my writing career, this trip probably won't. I'll have to think of it was a mini vacation, though it won't feel like one.

I'm On a Blog Tour Too

Like Beth Groundwater from yesterday's post, I'm also on a blog tour this month. I'll put a few of the upcoming stops at the end of my blog.

Like Beth, I believe covers are extremely important. I love the cover for Angel Lost. The publisher and I did go back and forth a bit because the first jogger on the cover had long hair, since this is supposed to be Stacey Milligan jogging who has short hair, I asked for a new silhouette and got it. Jogging plays an important part in the book--but Stacey always jogs in the morning and this is obviously a late afternoon sky and since the book is set in the West--well that has to be a sunset. But it does make a beautiful background which certainly adds to the cover so no argument about that.

So far the reviews coming in have been great--but I have to tell you that two emails from readers have pleased me the most.

The first was a friend and fellow author who said, "I stayed up all night to read Angel Lost and I don't do that often."

The second was also from a friend who is a retired New York cop and he gave me an idea for one of the plot threads, he said, "This is the best Rocky Bluff P.D. story yet. Keep on writing."
